This particular photograph is interesting, because while it is clearly a snapshot like his other works, it pays a lot of attention to formal qualities, even if subconsciously. For one, the value in the foreground is overall very dark, tempered only by the one white dress. This adds an obvious emphasis to that part of the photo, in fact, despite it occupying a small portion of the picture, the dress is the first thing to draw a viewer’s eye. The background value, however, is mostly light tones, which provides contrast with the people walking along. This causes them to stand out as well, despite the monochrome black suits. There does not appear to be an overwhelming amount of variety in the photo, for one, most colors are pure black or pure white, with a few shades of grey in between, but those two pure values dominating. Also, again, the foreground and background are mostly one shade. However, this serves to make the woman in the dress, the obvious focal point of the photos, stand out even more. Finally, there is a sense of unity, as the main subject is the same light tone as the background, uniting them over the dark tones of the other subjects.
