I chose this image because it is rare among Dave Hill's photos in that the subject is not human, and so has a distinctly different feel to it. The contrast is particularly vivid in the picture, every blade of grass in the foreground can be easily picked out from the rest, as can the lights in the bleachers. On a larger scale, the dark top half and light bottom half separate the photo into two parts, with the ball in the center standing out as much lighter than either. It's interesting how the mist catches the stadium floodlights, and how the sky in behind it seems to be lit red and black in a way it would not naturally be. The shadow of the ball, as well as the glare on the black pieces, are coming from a light source off screen, unaffected by the lights in back. Overall, it produces the kind of surreal effect most of his photos do, this one with somewhat ominous undertones.
