The idea of “style out of fear” is one that stuck with me. It is not a concept that you usually think of when looking at the fashion world, but once it is mentioned, it seems quite accurate. It is interesting that Schuman said style out of fear and not fashion out of fear, as it shows that even people’s personal accessories are influenced by what others are wearing. In a very literal sense, uniforms are entirely a style out of fear, as there would be tangible repercussions for wearing anything else. Aside from this, which I doubt is what Schuman meant; there is not a lot of fear-influenced fashion in my everyday life, yet this is not true for many places. Perhaps the greatest indicator of style out of fear is that entire subcultures have been devoted entirely to dressing a certain way. People identify themselves as part of a certain “crowd” by the way they dress, assuring that they will always have a certain style to fall back upon.
