The work of the Bechers felt very much like a typology to me. Particularly the set of houses-any one could have stood in for the others as an example picture of a typical “house,” yet they were not identical. The industrial photos varied a bit more, but the feel of each was generally similar. Equally important is that, looking at them, you can believe the photographers felt the same way. Any time they came upon something that seemed to say “industrial” they added it to the typology, without searching for something with exact parameters in mind. Blossfeldt’s work did give off similar vibes with each picture, but it feels as though he arranged every photo specifically to give that feeling. The Becher’s work feels more natural, as if they knew what they were looking for, but not where they’d find it.
