As Jordan said, it is very difficult for people to comprehend numbers of the magnitude that he was discussing. His photographs remind me of the project a school performed several years ago where they collected six million paperclips to represent the number of people killed during the holocaust, the finished product of which was displayed on a televised special. In other words, I do believe that visual representation of these statistics helps people to better grasp them. Saying a number is too high to understand is meaningless, but showing someone an orange canvas and telling them the prison uniforms are too far away to see individually has an entirely different effect. Displaying a wall of cups behind the Statue of Liberty may not make the number of them any more accessible, but the amount by volume is well within understanding. At the very least, anyone who sees these photos would be struck by a moment of awe for the massive scale they are on, although responses beyond that would be very different between people.
