The Sartorialist is an interesting blog in terms of the range of styles it encompasses. In skipping around to random parts of the archive, I came across clothes from three-piece suits to jeans, dresses to t-shirts, with all manner of colors and accessories. Schuman makes a clear distinction between “fashion” and “style” in his interview, and the blog focuses heavily on the style aspect, exploring individual flair created by combining traditional clothes. In a way, one could say that the people in the pictures are doing all the work, as they are the ones choosing what they wear, and how they do so. At the same time, however, many of the styles present in the photographs are very subtle, tiny things that a lot of people would miss, but that make just enough difference to be noteworthy. Schuman may be doing nothing more than capturing these and displaying them, but the emphasis on certain aspects of the style is important. As an example, one of my favorite of his photos, and also one of the simplest, is above, a pair of old gloves that seem to lend a lot of meaning to the outfit.
