Schuman’s distinction between fashion and style again comes into play when discussing money. It may be difficult to be fashionable without having the money to keep up with the latest clothes and trends, but he seems to say that someone can still look good without having up to the minute fashion. What he says about people “shopping in their own closets” indicates that it’s more important for people to find a look that works for them, through combining their old clothes in new ways. The pictures on his blog reflect this aspect of style. Many of the pictures are not of people wearing suits or dresses; you can find a lot of jeans and casual clothes among them. Often the picture is about a single element of the outfit, such as the brim of a hat, and how it seems to “complete” the rest of it. All in all, The Sartorialist seems to take a more laid-back view of fashion, showing more than just the latest trends.
